NexentaStor 3.0
NexentaStor 3.0
This new version of NexentaStor is the first commercial storage solution to incorporate ZFS-based in-line deduplication, a giant leap forward for the storage industry. NexentaStor 3.0 also includes an upgrade to VM Data Center to include support for Microsoft Hyper-V, making it the only storage management solution for virtualized environments to support all major virtualization vendors. With this release, NexentaStor continues to build on its position as the superior alternative to expensive, vertically integrated and proprietary storage technologies.
NexentaStor 3.0 revolutionizes storage by providing deduplication for primary (production) storage. This functionality enables customers to reduce their use of expensive and scarce primary storage. NexentaStor 3.0 exceeds the functionality of legacy deduplication by also offering bi-directional replication with compression and deduplication, superior end-to-end data integrity, and accelerated I/O through the native use of SSDs and hardware accelerators leveraged by the revolutionary ZFS file system.
All the above listed capabilities are leveraged to their fullest in the Nexenta Virtual Machine Datacenter (VMDC) 3.0 release based on NexentaStor 3.0. With its new support for Microsoft Hyper-V, NexentaStor is the only product to support VMware, Citrix Xen and Hyper-V from a single point within one unified environment, VMDC. VMDC allows storage administrators to see their entire virtual environment and to provision storage and storage policies including backup, replication and retention policies from a simple point and click interface.
Both NexentaStor and VMDC run on industry-standard hardware, a fundamental pillar of Open Storage, which drives dramatically lower costs than proprietary solutions; cost savings are considerable upfront, at initial purchase, and even greater over time as customers are able to purchase capacity expansions from the market for industry standard hardware as opposed to being locked-in to the outrageous costs of expanding legacy storage. Further, by making storage and virtualization management more efficient, NexentaStor with VMDC also reduces operational costs.
Additional capabilities of Nexenta 3.0 include:
- Greater ease of use for high availability functionality
- Enhanced support for a broader array of hardware including additional models of 10Gbe Ethernet and SAS-2 controllers for increased performance
- Simplified disaster recovery support via additional enhancements to underlying ZFS based replication.
Availability and Pricing
- NexentaStor 3.0 will be made generally available by the end of March 2010.
- Upgrades to NexentaStor 3.0 are available, at no additional cost to NexentaStor users.

NexentaStor 2.2
NexentaStor 2.2
NexentaStor 2.2 offers new features and improvements for storage users who are grappling with explosive data growth and technological and business model limitations of legacy storage providers. Specific new features include:
- Additional support for VM storage management—NexentaStor is the only OpenStorage solution on the market today that is both VMware and Citrix StorageLink certified and provides unlimited cloning and replication capabilities. The NexentaStor VM Data Center module provides complete visibility of a virtual server environment and establishes virtual machine storage policies.
- Unlike legacy systems, NexentaStor has no limitations on the number of virtual machines that can be created via templates or incremental snapshots. For example, a customer using NexentaStor’s VM Data Center or StorageLink from Citrix can easily create any number of identical virtual machines or desktops with just a few clicks and with no incremental storage capacity consumed or impact on the performance of the virtual server host machines.
- NexentaStor 2.2 adds additional virtual machine controls to VM Data Center and supplements the capabilities of the VMware virtual machine available for evaluation at no cost from Nexenta Systems at free trial.
- Open virus scanning—NexentaStor 2.2 includes system virus scanning with leading virus definition services. This eliminates the cost of purchasing and managing special purpose servers dedicated solely to virus scanning.
- Open data base integration—NexentaStor’s open, event driven API enables database administrators to easily integrate NexentaStor into their native database environments, where they can leverage its extreme snapshotting performance and flexibility. This capability has been near the top of the list of customer requests since NexentaStor added support for fiber channel earlier in 2009.
- Support for Asian language search—Unlike other ZFS based solutions, NexentaStor includes integrated search capabilities for the easy retrieval of specific file versions for restoration, which now includes the capacity to efficiently index and search Asian language snapshots. NexentaStor ensures that storage administrators can find and retrieve the correct information in order to meet even the strictest mean time to restore SLAs.
Availability and Pricing
- NexentaStor 2.2 was made generally available on 17 November 2009.
- Upgrades to NexentaStor 2.2 are available, at no additional cost to NexentaStor users.

Professional Services
In today's demanding business climate IT organizations have no shortage of challenges but continue to be resource constrained. One of the most common complaints that business managers express about IT is the difficulty of meeting the expectations of business benefits from IT investments.
Challenges
Implementing and integrating mission-critical storage configurations lead to the following challenges:
- Implementation and upgrades: Implementation and upgrades in a complex and heterogeneous server, network, and storage environment can be both challenging and time-consuming.
- Integration: Integrating with existing infrastructure and applications may need both expertise and custom-coding – skills that not every business can provide.
- Troubleshooting: Finding the root cause, much less resolve, bugs is both time-consuming and difficult.
Solution Overview
Nexenta can help you address today's particularly difficult environment for IT organizations in at least two ways:
- First, by generating substantial cost savings from a Nexenta deployment.
